Manchester City are reportedly set to beat Manchester United to the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred in a £50million deal in the summer transfer window.
According to the Daily Star, the Brazilian’s preferred destination is the Etihad Stadium and a deal is expected to go through in the summer ahead of next season.
City could certainly do with additions in the middle of the park, despite Fernandinho recently signing a new contract after his fine form this season.
Yaya Toure is another ageing star City could do with replacing with a younger model, and Fred looks an exciting prospect in that position after impressing in Ukraine.
The 24-year-old now looks ready to make the step up to the Premier League, and the Daily Star suggest a deal to move to City is very much on the cards.
They say United were also contenders for Fred’s signature, though it seems the Red Devils will have to look elsewhere to improve their midfield.
With club legend Michael Carrick set to retire in the summer, the Manchester Evening News have linked Jose Mourinho with a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal in that position.
It seems City are so far ahead in the race for this season’s Premier League title they are already putting the wheels in motion to prepare their squad to retain the trophy next year.
