Arsenal are reportedly set to make another push for the transfer of West Brom defender Jonny Evans before next week’s deadline as Manchester City end their interest.
According to the Independent, City are set to go for Athletic Bilbao centre-back Aymeric Laporte instead, giving Arsenal a boost as they line up a fresh approach for Evans.
The report claims the Northern Ireland international would cost around £20million, though he could leave for just £3m in the summer if the club are relegated due to a clause in his contract.
Arsenal, however, need signings now and could hugely benefit from the addition of a proven central defender with such pedigree at this level.
Evans has won three Premier League titles in his career, having been a key player for many years at Manchester United.
The 30-year-old has continued to impress with West Brom, and would surely be an upgrade on the likes of Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding and Calum Chambers at the back for the Gunners.
Per Mertesacker is also due to retire at the end of the season and Arsenal would do well to plan ahead for that by signing a new defender this winter.
