Man Utd transfer news: Mourinho eyes Chelsea raid, plus £40m swoop for PL star

Despite spending big on the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof this past summer, Man Utd could be in the market for reinforcements in January.

The Red Devils have had a solid start to the campaign, sitting on the verge of the knockout stage of the Champions League, while they’ve won eight of 12 Premier League games which leaves them in second place.

It hasn’t been enough to keep up the pace with rivals Man City though who have opened up an eight-point lead over Jose Mourinho’s side, and that could have sparked transfer talk to strengthen his squad further.

According to The Express, the Portuguese tactician is keen on a reunion with Chelsea winger Willian, who could move on in January having fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge under Antonio Conte.

The 29-year-old has made 18 appearances so far this season in all competitions, scoring just once while providing three assists, but importantly he’s come off the bench in the last three Champions League games and hasn’t started a Premier League match since mid-October.

With Conte preferring other options and with the Express adding that Lucas Moura is being targeted by the Blues, it could spell the end for the Brazilian with Mourinho still an admirer after previously working together.

Rose also target for Man Utd, Shaw could move to Tottenham

Meanwhile, after Danny Rose was dropped from the Tottenham squad for the north London derby against Arsenal on Saturday, speculation was rife that the 27-year-old could be set to move on in January.

As noted by the Metro, Mauricio Pochettino dismissed such talk as he revealed that the decision was made merely because Rose is still regaining fitness after such a lengthy spell on the sidelines, but that hasn’t prevented the rumour from gathering pace yet again.

According to The Mirror, United are ready to splash out £40m on the England international, or include Luke Shaw in a player-exchange deal.

While the possible Willian signing seems more like a luxury rather than a necessity, there’s no denying that Mourinho needs to sort out his situation at left-back at Old Trafford.

Shaw has struggled with injuries and poor form, while others have all chipped in to offer a short-term fix with Ashley Young in particular doing a decent job.

However, the Man Utd boss needs a natural in that position, and Rose would certainly be a top-class solution with his energy, pace, defensive and attacking qualities all making him stand out as one of Tottenham’s most important players.
