Liverpool defender Joe Gomez turned down the chance to seal a transfer to Chelsea earlier in his career, preferring to continue his development at Charlton, it has been revealed.
The England international had been offered the chance to join the Blues when he was just 15, but despite sleepless nights rejected them in a bid to ensure he got regular first-team football, according to the Telegraph.
Gomez’s decision now looks to be paying off after later moving to Liverpool and becoming a first-team regular almost straight away at Anfield before injury hampered his progress.
Still, the 20-year-old has recovered well to get back into contention this season under Jurgen Klopp, and his fine recent form was recognised by Gareth Southgate, who handed him his England debut against Germany last week.

Liverpool look to have a real talent on their hands, and Chelsea may live to regret not being able to persuade him to join when they first tried.
Some might argue, however, that the Premier League champions are paying the price for their poor track record of trusting their youngsters down the years.
Liverpool certainly looks a better stage for up-and-coming talents to get their chance to play and improve their game, with Chelsea sending most of their top youth players out on loan before selling them at a profit if they impress.
