Former Chelsea boss regrets failing to land Liverpool legend more than anyone else

In a nearly 20-year managerial career that has includes three Champions League titles and countless accolades, Carlo Ancelotti has missed out on acquiring several star players who could’ve helped in maximize his trophy-winning ways. Of the numerous star players Ancelotti failed to land throughout his career though, failing to land Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard weighs most heavily on him.

In an interview with FourFourTwo magazine [per Squawka News], the new Bayern Munich boss revealed that he regrets being unable to sign Gerrard during his time at AC Milan.

“I tried to sign Steven Gerrard from Liverpool but it just wasn’t possible,” he said when asked who he wished he had signed but couldn’t.

Ancelotti’s AC Milan team battled Gerrard in the Champions League on numerous occasions, most notably in two Champions League Finals in 2005 and 2007. Gerrard and company got the better of the Italians in 2005 after overcoming a 3-0 deficit and winning on penalty kicks, but in 2007 Ancelotti won the rematch thanks to a pair of Inzaghi goals.

By the time Ancelotti made his Premier League managerial debut as the man in charge at Stamford Bridge, Gerrard was far too dug-in at Anfield to even entertain the notion of leaving – let alone for one of his most bitter rivals.
