In the wake of Mamadou Sakho‘s impending punishment for failing a drug test, Liverpool are wasting no time scouring the globe for his replacement. Arsenal fans will most likely be very upset when they find out that the Reds are asking Barcelona to give them former Gunners star Thomas Vermaelen.

According to Sport, Liverpool have already submitted a formal offer to Barcelona for Vermaelen in the area of £7.5 million.  The Belgian centre-back was named Arsenal’s captain in 2012 following the departure of Robin van Persie but ultimately left the club in a £15 million transfer deal in 2014. He was named to the PFA Team of the Year in 2010.

The 30-year-old defender has been capped 47 times for Belgium and can be vouched for by several Liverpool teammates.

Vermaelen has seldom seen the field since moving to Camp Nou though, only making a handful of appearances for the club over the past two seasons. He scored his only goal for Barcelona in a 1-0 win over Malaga in August.
