It was a special day for Sergio Aguero – though not the team as a whole – as the Argentine striker once again reminded all of English football how dominant he was by scoring his milestone 100th BPL goal for Manchester City. Unfortunately, the goal did not come without an exceptional piece of controversy. In fact, the call was so bad that it’s hard to rationalize the netting actually being called a goal at all.
At the 14th minute, Aguero lined up – in what was later clearly identified as an offsides position – to accept a free kick from Aleksandar Kolarov, and promptly netted the ball in.
However, as the video rather clearly showed that Aguero was offsides – more offsides than most ticky-tack offsides calls that get made on an almost daily basis. How the referees missed this one is a mystery. Regardless, the outcome is still the same since the call will not be changed. As a result, Aguero becomes the second-fastest player in Premier League history to eclipse 100 goals, trailing only Newcastle United and England legend Alan Shearer.
Newcastle United later equalized thanks to a very rare goal from Vurnon Anita, and the Magpies defence held firm the rest of the match for a 1-1 draw.
