Manchester City are reportedly set to bid £28.8m for Inter striker Mauro Icardi in the January transfer window to ease the pressure on Sergio Aguero.
As reported by The Metro, City have identified the Argentinian international as a possible target next month in their bid to bring in reinforcements up front.
Having opted to allow both Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic to leave the club in the summer, Manuel Pellegrini has been left short of options this season, particularly following Sergio Aguero’s injury woes.
In turn, that has forced the Chilean tactician to field Raheem Sterling as his striker at times, and evidently it appears as though he has acknowledged that he needs more depth and quality in his squad in that area.
However, it remains to be seen if Icardi is the solution as the 22-year-old has struggled for form so far this season having scored just four goals in 12 games.
After initially catching the eye of several top European clubs with his displays for Sampdoria, he opted to join the Nerazzurri where he continued that impressive form last year.
In contrast, it hasn’t been the same this year under Roberto Mancini as the Inter side as a whole have struggled to find the back of the net consistently, although it hasn’t effected them too negatively as they sit top of the Serie A table.
Considered as one of the top prospects in Europe, Icardi may welcome the opportunity for a fresh challenge but it remains to be seen if he is allowed to move on in January.
