Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka has distanced himself from rumours linking him with a transfer to Liverpool.

Bild [via the Mirror] reported that Jurgen Klopp is keen to bring the defensive player to Anfield in the summer, and the German coach reportedly views the Swiss international as a key player as he looks to restore the Reds to their former glory.

Bild [via AFP] reported that the Reds are plotting a €28 million-approach for the 23-year-old, although considering Bayern Munich failed with a €35 million move ahead of the season [also AFP], it remains to be seen whether Gladbach would realistically consider selling for this fee.

However, speaking to Sky Sports Germany [as per AFP as above], the midfielder has insisted that he is enjoying life at Gladbach and not considering a departure.

“My job is to concentrate on football, I still have a contract until 2019 and I am happy here,” the midfielder began.

“That is what counts and everything is a matter for my father (his agent).”

The international missed Gladbach’s weekend triumph over Hannover 96 in the Bundesliga due to suspension. Die Fohlen still won the match to move up to fourth in the German table.

Any intentions Klopp had of investing heavily in the Swiss international may be tempered in light of the superb performances of current defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva in recent weeks.

The 28-year-old has impressed at the base of the midfield, and the solidity he provides looks to have helped Klopp get the best out of Emre Can.

Lucas shone in the 4-1 triumph over Manchester City on Saturday, completing four tackles and making five interceptions, and as such, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool truly need to sign Xhaka.
