Chelsea have agreed a £2.7m deal to sign Nantes defender Papy Djilobodji according to the Independent.

The experienced centre-back has spent the past five years at Nantes and has a dozen Senegal national team caps, and his potential arrival at Stamford Bridge would offer Jose Mourinho further strength in depth at the back.

Mourinho has seen his usually reliable defence come unstuck in a big way this season with the Blues failing to keep a clean sheet in their opening four Premier League fixtures, during which both John Terry and Gary Cahill have found themselves out of the Chelsea starting eleven.

Kurt Zouma has been brought in by Mourinho in a bid to boost his back-line but this hasn’t stopped Chelsea conceding nine goals in four matches.

Chelsea have turned to Djilobodji after failing with efforts to bring in Everton’s John Stones (via BBC Sport) and the Independent claims a four year deal is set to be signed by the Ligue 1 defender.

Jose Mourinho has seen his side’s Premier League title defence begin in faltering fashion, and thus far the Chelsea manager hasn’t been all that active in the summer transfer window. Whilst this likely deal is by no means an earth-shattering one it could prove crucial in the long-run.
