Gary Lineker, former England and Tottenham Hotspur striker, has hit out at Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho for his controversial comments and subsequent treatment of Blues first-team doctor Eva Carneiro.
Mourinho was left furious with Carneiro when she ran onto the pitch in the final minutes of their 2-2 draw with Swansea City to see to Eden Hazard after a heavy challenge.
And It was yesterday reported that – apparently nothing more than a coincidence in the timing – she has had her role vastly reduced with the club.
She will no longer attend training sessions or be present on match days, and will not be allowed to enter the team hotel. This change in her position comes into effect immediately, and for the first since 2011, she will not take her place on the bench, remaining at home for the clash against Manchester City on Sunday.
After the game, Mourinho said that his problem with Carneiro was: “Even if you are a kit man, doctor or secretary on the bench, you have to understand the game,” as quoted by Sky Sports.
Lineker has since taken to Twitter to write that, if an understanding of the game takes precedent over medical expertise, then he’s the man Mourinho should hire!
Might apply for the Chelsea doctor’s job given the applicant must understand football. Not sure if any medical knowledge is required.
