Big transfer news for United fans.

Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos has agreed to stay with the club after signing a new five-year contract at the Bernabeu, despite long-standing interest from Manchester United this summer.

According to Marca, the Spanish international centre-back has agreed to commit his future to the club until 2020, seemingly putting any transfer speculation over his future to bed. Marca adds that he has landed himself a pay rise with this new deal and that it will be formally announced before the start of the La Liga season on the 23rd of August.

Sky Sports reported that United had bid for Ramos earlier this month, and with rumours also strongly linking Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi with a move to Old Trafford this summer (via the Metro), then it’s clear that the Red Devils are targeting a new addition at the back before the transfer window closes.

United just lost a friendly to Paris Saint-Germain with their defenders looking suspect, which further demonstrates the need for an upgrade on players like Phil Jones and Jonny Evans, who were both well below-par for Louis van Gaal’s side last season as they only scraped a top four finish in the Premier League.

The 2013 Premier League champions will be keen to establish themselves as among the main title contenders in 2015/16, but still look a little short if they cannot land a world class central defender in the Ramos or Otamendi mould.

According to ESPN, Everton youngster John Stones may now be one of the club’s top targets for that position, though Chelsea and Manchester City are also mentioned as interested.
