Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is closing in on a switch to Serie A giants AS Roma, according to reports in Italy.

The Pole was relegated to being the club’s second choice goalkeeper following an error-strewn performance in the Gunners’ 2-0 defeat away at Southampton on New Years Day.

David Ospina, who joined the club from Ligue 1 outfit Nice last summer, came in for Szczesny and performed well enough to keep his place in the team for Premier and Champions League games until the end of the 2014-15 campaign.

However, both stoppers chances of regular first team football in the new season have been severely dented following the arrival of Petr Cech from London rivals Chelsea earlier in the summer.

It is expected that one of Szczesny or Ospina will exit the Emirates Stadium this summer and despite it appearing to be the Colombian that would face the axe, fresh reports in Italian publication Il Tempo [via Metro Sport] claim Roma have agreed personal terms with the former and are on the verge of completing a deal after opening talks with the North London outfit.

It remains to be seen whether this transfer will be permanent one or a season-long loan deal, but it appears manager Arsene Wenger has settled on his two goalkeepers for the new season and Szczesny is the odd one out.
