Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has hinted that he is going to make a surprise striker signing this summer, reports the Daily Mirror.
The Red Devils are short on forward options after losing Robin van Persie join Fenerbahce and Radamel Falcao’s loan ending. To make matters worse they have seen the Colombia international join Premier League rivals Chelsea.
This has left van Gaal with Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez as his only senior players in the position. The 63-year-old also seems keen to use 19-year-old James Wilson, although the youngster wasn’t trusted much last season. He scored two goals in 17 appearances during the campaign, but only made four starts.
“We have Rooney, he can play in strikers’ position,” van Gaal said, “and all media had written he should play there so I listen and now you put this question so don’t know what you want.
“Also Chicharito and maybe Wilson and maybe there comes a surprise. It’s a process. I’m not worried about that position.”

The Dutchman also added that Hernandez’s future could be significantly brighter after the departure of so many rival players. The Mexico international was farmed out on loan to Real Madrid last time round, but he seems set to stay at Old Trafford this season.
Van Gaal said: “Hernandez is coming on July 25. He can prove himself and now Falcao and Van Persie are gone so his chances are better now.”
Even with all of these options United will likely still need to add to their squad in the position. With added games from the Champions League and higher expectations in the Premier League they will need as many goal scorers as they can get.
