The former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper has been heavily linked with a return to the Spanish capital this summer; however, van Gaal has voiced his admiration for the 24-year-old’s professionalism, even with the persistent speculation surrounding his Old Trafford future.
De Gea regrouped with his Red Devils team-mates in pre-season training earlier this week – a task that the Daily Star described as one that could have been a ‘humiliating’ experience – but the Dutchman suggests that is far from the reality:
“I think he is a very professional player and he has shown fantastic attitude until now,” as quoted by the Mirror.
This morning there has been further news on the Spain international’s possible transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu – with Spanish newspaper Marca claiming that the Premier League giants remain adamant that their No.1 will not be sold at a cut-price, and are demanding €40m (£28.7m) for his signature.
Nonetheless, the Mirror have implied that United are expecting De Gea to leave for Madrid this summer, and Atleti’s Jan Oblak has emerged as van Gaal’s first-choice replacement target.
However, with reports, such as Marca, claiming that a transfer fee is far from being agreed upon – negotiations appear to have hit a significant impasse and the saga looks set to drag on.
