Chelsea could pay the required €18m to sign Stuttgart defender Antonio Rudiger this summer, though they may face competition from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid, according to German source Bild, with additional information from ESPN.
The Blues could do with defensive reinforcements due to a lack of depth in that area, with only untested French youngster Kurt Zouma as a backup to John Terry and Gary Cahill at the back.
Rudiger’s fine form makes him the ideal target for the Premier League champions, and there’s no doubt Jose Mourinho will be keen to make sure he doesn’t miss out on the player, with The Sun reporting today that the Portuguese coach is unhappy with a lack of action in the transfer market so far this summer.
Still, it seems that Chelsea are ready to pay the required fee for Rudiger as Stuttgart confirm interest in the 22-year-old, who looks a talented and physically imposing centre-back who’d fit in well in the Premier League.
Bild adds that Wolfsburg are another club chasing Rudiger, who already has six caps for the senior German national team and whose future seems up in the air.
