Manchester United have announced that they will officially unveil new signing Memphis Depay to the press this afternoon, via their official Twitter account.

The Red Devils reportedly paid £31m to bring in the Netherlands forward from PSV, according to BBC Sport, and reports from the Daily Mail suggest that Liverpool initially made an approach to bring the youngster in as well, though he may not have been a top priority target for the Merseyside giants.

Depay scored 28 goals for PSV last season, establishing himself as one of Europe’s best young talents, and there’s no doubt he could have been a big signing for any Premier League side.

With Manchester City chasing the signing of Raheem Sterling this summer (as BBC Sport claim a second bid of around £40m was rejected), it seems pretty clear that a player like Depay would have made an ideal replacement for the England international, with both capable of playing out wide and up front, providing a serious goal threat as well as pace and skill in attack.

Still, United will be delighted to show off their latest big-money buy, with Depay following on from exciting arrivals like Angel Di Maria and Ander Herrera, who were brought in last summer by manager Louis van Gaal.
