Former Chelsea star Frank Lampard has spoken about his old team-mate Petr Cech‘s shock transfer to rivals Arsenal this summer, The Sun reports.
The Czech Republic international made the move to the Emirates Stadium this summer after finding himself on the bench for much of last season at Stamford Bridge, with Thibaut Courtois becoming Jose Mourinho’s preferred number one.
Still, Cech enjoyed a great career with the Blues and helped them to much success as one of the best goalkeepers in the world for many years, and Lampard feels there is no doubt his presence in the Arsenal squad could see them close the gap on their title rivals.
With Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina sharing the number one duties last term, it’s clear that Arsene Wenger has been unconvinced by the pair in that position, with Cech’s arrival surely set to see him become number one for the Gunners, as he used to be at Chelsea.
Lampard knows the 33-year-old well after playing alongside him for the best part of a decade, and although he thinks his arrival could boost Arsenal, he still sees hid old clubs Chelsea and Manchester City as the main favourites for the title next season.
“Arsenal signing Petr Cech is a big deal,” the ex-England midfielder said.
“A lot of mates who are Arsenal fans have bemoaned their keeper situation for ages.
“Cech is a world-class keeper and person and can help push Arsenal into the running next season.
“Arsenal weren’t a million miles away over the last few seasons. They are always challenging before falling just short but Cech going there, as John Terry said recently, will save them points.
“Manchester City and Chelsea will be challenging for the title once again. They remain favourites but Petr will make a difference.”
