At the end of May, the Argentina international’s agent, Eugenio Lopez, stated that his client – who has a release-clause of £35.9m [via the Express] – was looking to leave the Mestalla Stadium in the summer window [via Sky Sports], and following the revelations, the Red Devils quickly emerged as favourites for his signature.
A few weeks ago, the Mirror claimed that the centre-back – despite not being Louis van Gaal’s first-choice target at centre-back – was desperate on a move to Old Trafford. The British newspaper went on to state that the 27-year-old had told his representatives to push through a move to the Premier League giants.
However, Real Madrid were rumoured to be looking to scupper van Gaal’s chances of signing Otamendi by making their own move for the player – viewing the Valencia star as a desired replacement to the unsettled Sergio Ramos, the Mirror reported.
Nonetheless, such speculation over a move to the Santiago Bernabeu has been dismissed by Lopez, who hints that the former Porto ace’s future may already be decided.
“Before Sergio Ramos leaves Real Madrid – if he does leave – Otamendi will be already playing for another club,” as quoted by the Daily Star.
