The Dutch midfielder is also a reportedly a transfer target for Newcastle United, and while it remains to be seen if Steve McClaren will move for the player, their fierce local rivals are understood to be favourites for his signature [Express via the Daily Star].

The 22-year-old moved to Stamford Bridge from Vitesse Arnhem in 2013 after winning the Johan Cruyff trophy for the young Dutch football talent of the year.

Despite a handful of promising showings for the West London side, has largely struggled to make his mark on the first-team.

He spent last season on loan at AC Milan, where he managed 17 appearances, contributing one goal and one assist.

However, he looks no closer to the Pensioners starting XI, and, keen for first-team football in the EPL, is unlikely to spend the coming campaign at Chelsea.

Van Ginkel represented the Netherlands at U15, U19 and U21 level, before making his Holland debut in 2012.

The Dutchman would be a technically-proficient, energetic option for the Black Cats and, should a deal be concluded, he would be Dick Advocaat’s second summer signing following the addition of Sebastian Coates from Liverpool [BBC].

Both Jermaine Lens and Nicolas Lombaerts have been linked to the club—according to Sky Sports [via the Star]—as the veteran Dutch manager looks to stave off the menace of relegation.
