The Telegraph state that, while the Red Devils are eager to sign the Saints star, the Frenchman is not at the top of van Gaal’s wish list.
The former Netherlands manager, instead, is desperate to land Bayern Munich’s Bastian Schweinsteiger – who is the Dutchman’s first-choice midfield signing this summer.
Negotiations are currently underway with the Premier League giants, and Southampton are optimistic that their asking price of £25m will be met.
According to the British newspaper, however, Ronald Koeman wants Schneiderlin’s transfer completed quickly to avoid losing out on replacement targets Feyenoord’s Jordy Clasie and Anderlecht’s Dennis Praet. The club are anxious that, if Manchester United continue to delay a deal, they could miss out on both players.
Praet is a target for Zenit Saint Petersburg, while Clasie is not of short of interest in the summer window, state the Telegraph.
It appears almost certain that Schneiderlin will leave the St Mary’s Stadium in the coming weeks; however, van Gaal’s desire to land Bundesliga legend Schweinsteiger is proving a stumbling block in negotiations.
Arsenal have also been credited with interest, but the Daily Star have revealed that Arsene Wenger failed to believe the 25-year-old was worth his price-tag of £25m.
