Arsenal transfer target describes Gunners as ‘great club’ and admits uncertainty over future
The defender revealed that the cliques that had been formed at the club in previous campaigns are now a thing of the past and believes the team spirit was the main cause of their brilliant form during the second half of last season:
“The atmosphere [in the dressing room] is amazing, not only with the Spanish-speaking players but throughout the team,” the Spaniard told Goal at Arsenal’s new Puma home kit launch earlier in the week.
“We are one group. Maybe before there were groups of English, French or Spanish players, but now we are together as a group. The atmosphere is amazing, and I think that’s why we finished the season playing so well.
“At the beginning of the season it was different, and when the atmosphere is not good, it’s difficult to win games and play well. During the second part of the season, we played really well because the atmosphere was amazing,” he added.
Monreal proved to be one of the club’s unsung heroes after winning his battle with Kieran Gibbs for the left-back spot and scored a crucial goal against Manchester United in the FA Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford back in March.
His performance in that game helped seal the Gunners’ passage into semi-final-in which he was only a substitute-but was brilliant once again after being recalled for the final against Aston Villa.
The former Malaga man made 36 apperances in all competitions last season and even had a stint playing at centre-back due to the club’s defensive injury crisis during the early stages of the campaign.
