Manchester United look close to completing a move to sign Valencia centre-back Nicolas Otamendi in a £25m deal, after agreeing a fee and personal terms with the player.
The Argentine international has long been linked as a top target for United boss Louis van Gaal, who is known to be keen on recruiting a new big name in central defence.
The likes of Mats Hummels have also been linked with moves to Old Trafford in recent times (the Daily Express claimed a move could be back on in the last couple of days), but it looks like Otamendi will be the new addition for the Red Devils as they look to build a stronger squad to challenge Chelsea for the Premier League title next season.
According to the Daily Star, only a few more details need to be ironed out now for the La Liga man to complete his move to United, in what could be one of the most important signings the club makes this summer.
Otamendi would be the Reds’ second signing after a deal for Memphis Depay was confirmed this week, with Van Gaal seemingly keen to move quickly to bring in the players he wants ahead of the competition.
Regarded as one of the most solid defenders in Spain last season, Otamendi should form a fine partnership with either Chris Smalling or fellow Argentine Marcos Rojo at the back for United, meaning being less reliant on inconsistent performers such as Phil Jones and Jonny Evans, plus less pressure on youngsters like Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair, who both played a surprisingly high number of games in 2014/15 given their inexperience at the top level.
