Manchester United transfer news
Manchester United have revived their interest in signing Southampton right back and Liverpool target Nathaniel Clyne this summer, according to the Liverpool Echo.
The England international has impressed the two Premier League giants with his fine performances in 2014/15, showing himself to be a talented attack-minded defender with the ability to cope at the top level after becoming a regular for Roy Hodgson’s side in recent games.
United’s lack of genuine options on the right-hand side of their defence has seen Louis van Gaal show a strong interest in Clyne, with the likes of Rafael da Silva and Antonio Valencia looking far from ideal as long-term solutions in that role for the Red Devils.
With the Echo confirming that Brendan Rodgers’ side failed with a £10m bid for the defender in May, United still have time to lure the player to Old Trafford instead.
The newspaper add that Clyne has become more of a priority for United after Dani Alves opted to extend his deal at Barcelona. A summer exit looked possible this year, with the Brazilian’s contract expiring at the end of June, but he played a critical role in helping Barca win the treble.
Clyne is a similarly skilful and pacey full back from out wide and looks a good option for United to consider at this stage. The Red Devils will no doubt be hoping he can prove more of a success at Old Trafford than his old team-mate Luke Shaw, who made the same move in last summer’s transfer window, but who failed to impress in his first season in the United first-team.
