Tottenham Hotspur could be about to launch an ambitious summer transfer bid to beat the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea to the signing of Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.

The north London outfit are set to try their luck with an opening bid of £20m for the powerful Belgian international, who enjoyed a fine run of form in the Premier League this season.
The 24-year-old has a buy-out clause in his Villa contract that means he can leave if a club offers £32.5m for him, and it is anticipated that the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and perhaps Manchester United could be in the running.
However, reports in The Sun suggest Spurs want to enter the running for Benteke’s signature as they seek to make the signings that could see them move into contention for a top four spot next season.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side certainly need more options up front, with Benteke an ideal partner for Harry Kane and a significant upgrade on the likes of Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor in that position.
