Manchester United star set to use summer to recover from injury problem

It had been thought that the Toffees were firm favourites to sign the Northern Irishman, but the North London club have now given the 27-year-old a decision to make over his future. Staying with the Red Devils may not be an option after being openly criticised by manager Louis van Gaal for spitting on Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse earlier in the campaign.

Wherever the centre-back goes will be a big step in his career, having only ever been contracted to the Old Trafford outfit. He has spent some time on loan at Sunderland, but even so it will be a major change to leave the Red Devils.

Spurs need to improve their defence over the summer having conceded a massive 53 goals in the Premier League so far this season. If they want to genuinely challenge for the top four and qualification to the Champions League then that will need to be improved on by manager Mauricio Pochettino.
