Goodbye Manchester United? David de Gea waves to each corner of Old Trafford as Real Madrid transfer looms
The 24-year-old has been heavily linked with a switch to the Santiago Bernabeu for much of the campaign, as the Spanish giants look to replace the faltering Iker Casillas with Manchester United’s world-class keeper.
It now seems that a transfer is edging ever closer as, combined with the stopper’s wave to the Old Trafford crowd, Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal was unable to quash Los Blancos speculation after the 1-1 draw with the Gunners – all but admitting that they are almost powerless in keeping the Spain international at the club.
The Dutchman told Sky Sports, “He has the chance to go to another great club.
“He is Spanish. His girlfriend is Spanish,” he added.
“But he shall not leave easily, because we have a great club.”
The Premier League giants have been reported to have offered de Gea a new blockbuster deal to tempt him to extend his future at the Theatre of Dreams, but his refusal to sign a new deal looks a sign that he is itching for a return to his hometown, Madrid.
The Spaniard has been in stunning form this term with his performances in between the posts helping the Red Devils return to the top four, and secure a return to the Champions League next season.
