The record £86m signing was once again given a hard time by the home crowd, as he missed a number of chances to put the Spanish giants through to the final, setting up a meeting with arch-rivals Barcelona.

He has continually been tipped to make a swift exit from the Bernabeu this summer, but he is remaining defiant by insisting that he will remain with the club despite the abuse he has received this term.

“There have been some ups and downs but I feel personally I have played well,” he said.

“I haven’t scored as many important chances as I’d have liked but my general play has been good.

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and I’ll learn from this season.

“I was unlucky not to grab one.

“The back-post header was the most frustrating.”

Bale may not have reached the same heights of last season, but he has not been poor by any stretch. In 29 appearances in La Liga this term he has bagged 13 goals and created nine assists, whereas Chelsea’s Eden Hazard has scored 14 in 36 Premier League games, creating eight assists, and he has been roundly praised as having the season of his life.
