A virus ravaged its way through the United camp last week, but the Dutchman missed only a day’s training before taking part on Friday and travelling down to London with the rest of the squad.

However, manager Louis Van Gaal didn’t even name him as a substitute.

The strict tactician has very stringent rules on only including players that have had a full week’s training under their belt as he seeks to highlight the difference between being fit and being full match fit.

Van Gaal claimed his compatriot missed the clash because of a virus, but he has recently only returned from an ankle injury and was below par against the defeat to West Brom last week.

With a clash against former club Arsenal on the horizon, Van Persie will be hoping to prove his fitness once again.
