Manchester United are reportedly in advanced negotiations with Southampton in their bid to sign highly-rated right-back Nathaniel Clyne as Louis van Gaal looks to bolster his defensive department ahead of a potential title challenge next season, according to reports in the Metro.

The England international has one year remaining on his contract with the Saints and his comments that were reported by the BBC last week suggested that he was going to stay at St Mary’s but United are thought to have made an £18million offer for the 24-year-old.
Clyne has been one of the stand out players in the Barclays Premier League this season and the potential deal further highlights that van Gaal and United are aiming to avoid a repeat of last year when they signed players late in the transfer window.
The news comes on the back of confirmation during the week that young Dutch winger Memphis Depay will officially sign for the club once the transfer window opens next month.
