The Red Devils want to strengthen in defence and midfield this summer after a frustrating season that could still see them narrowly miss out on a place in the Premier League’s top four.

The signings of Hummels and Gundogan would certainly go some way to turning United’s squad into one that looks better equipped to truly challenge for the Premier League title, with some doubts over Louis van Gaal’s current options in those areas.

According to the Metro, Gundogan may already have agreed personal terms over a transfer to Old Trafford, while Hummels could be close to joining his German international team-mate in quitting Dortmund for Manchester.

Sources in Germany seem to suggest both these players are edging closer to joining United, with the club beating other European giants to their signatures.
