Recent poor results had all but ended Liverpool’s hope of a top four finish and anything less than three points against the Tigers would prove fatal.
Rodgers saw his side come up against an inspired keeper in Steve Harper, the former Newcastle United man pulling off a succession of top saves, this double stop being the pick of the bunch.
Hull City had few chances of their own but took the lead on 37 minutes when Michael Dawson was given all the time in the world to head home past Simon Mignolet.
Liverpool were unable to convert their chances in the second period, during which Rodgers has thrown on Rickie Lambert, Lazar Markovic and Adam Lallana to no avail, and the defeat leaves them seven points behind fourth placed Man United with just four games to play.
