Brendan Rodgers has been in pole position to secure the services of the England Under-21 international for the next season, but Louis van Gaal has thrown a spanner in the works.
The Clarets forward reportedly caught the eye of the Dutchman after he got on the scoresheet with an impressive performance at Old Trafford in February.
And, according to the Daily Mail, Manchester United have held talks with Burnley over the 22-year-old making a switch to the Premier League giants in the summer, with the club believing that Ings could become a future star for the England senior squad – just like Red Devils skipper Wayne Rooney.
His contract is set to expire at the end of the season but, due to his age, if he makes a move to a domestic club, Burnley would pocket around £5m in compensation – and both Liverpool and Manchester United are eager to take advantage of this loophole by pushing through a quick transfer.
Real Sociedad, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have also been linked with the in-demand striker.
Nonetheless, while Ings’ future is hot on the transfer rumour mill – his concentration must lie solely with helping Burnley to pull off a stunning fight back, and avoid relegation after just one season in the top flight.
