The Gunners already have the in-form Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck to choose from upfront, while last summer’s signing Alexis Sanchez can also operate as a striker and has done on several occasions this season to good effect.

It is questionable if Arsenal need Higuain at this stage, despite the 27-year-old’s obvious qualities in attack and great goalscoring record for both Napoli and former club Real Madrid.

Arsene Wenger has notably tried to sign Higuain before, and the Metro now claims that talks have begun over a deal to bring the player to the Emirates Stadium for next season.

Giroud and Welbeck have divided critics this season, though it is fair to say that the French forward has been particularly impressive in recent games and would be hard done by if he were no longer first choice next term.
