The Dutchman hopes Rooney can give the team talk to his side ahead of this meeting at Old Trafford, which represents a real opportunity for the Red Devils to get some revenge on their neighbours, who have a great recent record on United’s ground.
Rooney scored the winner the last time United beat City in the league at Old Trafford, with that now-famous overhead kick making the difference in a 2-1 victory, which has since been followed up by a humiliating 6-1 defeat the following season, a 2-1 loss in 2013 and another one-sided 3-0 win for City last term.
Rooney is said to have given the team talk for United in their recent win over Tottenham Hotspur, and van Gaal now believes he could inspired the team to win this big game, according to The Sun.
