The Spaniard has also been a big part of the resurrection, scoring twice against Aston Villa on the weekend taking his season total to seven in 24 appearances. However, he believes his captain has been more important to the great run the Old Trafford side have managed in recent months.
The England captain has netted 14 times in 31 games for the Old Trafford side, which is impressive given he was largely playing in midfield until the New Year. The 25-year-old described his teammate as his ‘hero’, and went on to add:
“Wayne is our leader. He is maybe the strongest guy — not only physically but also mentally. He is our captain, our leader and our character. He shows very, very well what Manchester United is.”
United are next up against fierce local rivals Manchester City, who are in terrible form after losing to Crystal Palace on Monday.
