The 25-year-old helped the Red Devils to a 3-1 victory over the Midlands side, which took them in to third in the Premier League. They overhauled local rivals Manchester City in the process. This was the first ever time the Spaniard had scored twice in the same game, and he has now netted seven times in 24 appearances in his first season at Old Trafford.
Herrera said: “It was a great day, one of the best in my professional career,” said Herrera, who arrived at Old Trafford from Athletic Bilbao last summer. It’s the first time I have scored twice in (one game in) my career, so I am very happy.
“It is my top-scoring season. Now, I want to keep scoring more to help the team.”
This win coupled with Liverpool’s loss means that United are now eight points ahead of the fifth placed Merseyside club and look set for Champions League football in the next campaign.
This will be seen as a success for manager Louis van Gaal, who is also in his first season with the Mancunian side.
