20 year old striker Juan Cruz Kaprof scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute after coming on as a substitute at half time.
The game marked the inaugural edition of the tournament, which saw the winners of the 2014 Europa League play the winners of the 2014 Copa Sudamericana.
The result ended a run of five consecutive wins for the Spanish side, who are still on track to win this season’s Europa League after a last 16 win over Borussia Monchengladbach earlier this month. They will play Zenit St Petersburg in the quarter final.
River Plate are currently fifth in the Argentine Primera A after six games, four points behind surprise leaders Rosario Central. Despite their strong start to the domestic campaign, they’re having a nightmare in the Copa Libertadores; they sit third in Group 6, two points behind second-placed Peruvian side Juan Aurich with just two games remaining.
