Twitter reacts with disappointment as Harry Kane starts on the bench for England

The forward made the score 2-0 in stoppage time after getting the slightest touch on a cross. A subsequent deflection off a Lithuanian defender wrong-footed the goalkeeper, who could only watch the ball agonisingly cross the line.

Welbeck had a hand in the opening goal also, after his parried shot fell to his former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney. The captain had a simple task to head the ball home to get England off the mark inside six minutes.

The goals will also be a source of satisfaction for manager Roy Hodgson, who received plenty of criticism once the teamsheet was announced, as he chose to start Welbeck over in form Tottenham striker Harry Kane. The Premier League’s joint-leading goalscorer will have to wait a little longer for his first cap, having only made the bench.
