(Video) Harry Kane starts on the bench for England – Roy Hodgson reveals why
Statistics suggest that Harry Kane has little to gain from England Under-21 games
The Manchester United captain started ahead of in form Spurs striker Harry Kane, with former teammate and Arsenal star Danny Welbeck alongside him.
Rooney had a great chance to score in the opening minutes, but his shot hit the post and drifted agonisingly across the goal and to safety. Just moments later he was in the right place at the right time however, pouncing on a rebound to head past the Lithuanian shot-stopper.
Welbeck showed great feet to get away from his marker, nutmegging his man to make himself some space. His shot was parried, but only as far as Rooney for a simple finish.
This goal will certainly silence some of the critics, with many hitting out at Roy Hodgson for starting with Welbeck and Rooney ahead of Harry Kane.
