The Ligue 1 giants are the latest big club to show an interest in the highly-rated Netherlands international, who has been talked about as one of the best young talents in Europe.

Still, both Liverpool and United have plenty of options in the attacking midfield department, and their long-standing interest in Depay certainly seemed a little surprising.

Still young, only 21 years old, Depay has much to prove after only really impressing in the Dutch Eredivisie – a far cry from other European leagues these days – and would command a hefty transfer fee of around £20m or more.

Sure, Liverpool face losing Raheem Sterling and Depay could be a good replacement, but youngsters such as Jordan Ibe coming through have also made a strong case, while Adam Lallana, Philippe Coutinho and Lazar Markovic also provide plenty of options for the Reds in that area.

United, meanwhile, need defenders more than anything, and have the likes of Angel Di Maria, Juan Mata, Adnan Januzaj and more to choose from out wide – is an inexperienced Dutch youngster really going to be such an upgrade?
