It was a rough weekend for French referees. While Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s outburst against the official after Paris Saint-Germain’s 3-2 defeat at the hands of Girondins de Bordeaux, Payet’s insults went under the radar.
The former Saint-Etienne man was unhappy that the ref missed a Marseille goal when Lucas Ocampos’s effort crossed the goalline after it was parried by Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.
The league’s disciplinary committee will meet to discuss whether Payet has a case to answer, and, if so, the player will have up to three weeks to explain his actions according to France Football.
He will potentially face a four-match suspension.
