Chilean Pellegrini saw his side suffer a shock defeat at struggling Burnley and as a result severely dented his Etihad Stadium side’s hopes of retaining their Premier League title.
Chelsea now lead City by five points, and have two games in hand, and should Pellegrini fail to produce a remarkable turnaround in their Champions League second leg clash with Barcelona then his days in charge may be numbered.
Benitez now leads the Man City’s wish-list, with Pellegrini ironically hotly tipped to replace the Spaniard at Serie A side Napoli.
