The player was presented to fans and the media this week in Gremio’s home city of Porto Alegre. His loan will be for three months, after which the two sides have an option to either extend or cancel the agreement.
The Uruguayan midfielder, who played in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, wants more minutes to ensure he gets a call up for his country ahead of the Copa America this summer.
Since arriving at the Spanish club in 2012 he has never been a regular for Simeone’s team. Rodriguez accepted an offer to go on loan to Parma in January, however the move was curtailed as Parma experienced a serious financial crisis.
He began his career in the youth team of Uruguayan side Penarol, and has also played for Porto, Benfica, and Paris Saint Germain, amongst others.
