A long ball straight from kick-off was enough to get the better of Villarreal, with Vitolo finishing from close range to make it 1-0.
The home side almost leveled it up seconds later, but they were denied by the crossbar.
Sevilla doubled their lead just before the half hour mark, Stephane Mbia powering a header into the back of the net. There were shades of offside, but the goal was allowed to stand.
Villarreal got themselves back in the game just after half time, Luciano Vietto prodding in after a scramble in the box. There was a handball in the box seconds earlier, but thankfully for Vietto it wasn’t given and play carried on.
Sevilla restored their two goal cushion just minutes later however, Kevin Gameiro smashing a volley in from close range.
The Yellow Submarine should have clawed one back right at the death, but Sergio Rico stood up well to make a double save as Vietto headed goalwards.
