The right back’s contract is due to expire in 2016 and the Saints have now offered him £45,000 per week in order to remain at the club.

The 23-year-old is also a Chelsea target, however Southampton are determined to hold on to both him and Morgan Schneiderlin as they seek to avoid a summer exodus for the second season in succession.

Schneiderlin has been catching admiring glances from Arsenal and Spurs, but has now been offered a £60,000 a week deal to stay – more than twice his current salary.

Southampton face Chelsea in a crucial top-of-the-table clash at the weekend.
