In an age where Premier League teams are largely dominated by foreign talent, it is well documented that the quota of homegrown English talent needs to be fulfilled and it is thought that this is where a large part of the motivation for these moves comes from.
It remains to be seen whether the club will be willing, or able to under Financial Fair Play, to make a bid for Everton’s Ross Barkley, who is valued by the Toffees at £50 million.
Added to which, Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere is under contract at the Emirates Stadium for another three years with the Gunners looking to extend his deal by another two years with a £150,000 a week deal.
Manchester City, though, have a history of signing Arsenal players with Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna all on their books while Gunners legend Patrick Vieira is a development coach at the Etihad Stadium.
Premier League clubs are allowed 17 non-British players in their 25 man squads, leaving eight spaces for homegrown players to make up the numbers.
