The Real Madrid player is out of contract at the end of the season and is widely expected to leave the Bernabeu after talks of a new deal to keep him in the Spanish capital went cold.
Gelsenkirchen-based club Schalke have openly discussed the possibility of bringing Khedira back to Germany, which is bad news for a host of Premier League clubs who had been looking to recruit the 27-year-old.
Schalke manager Roberto Di Matteo would welcome the opportunity to work with the Real Madrid man and said, “Khedira? We all know he’s a great player. If he wants to come, the door is open. He’s a world-class player.”
Offering a glimmer of hope for other suitors, president of the Bundesliga club Horst Heldt would not be drawn on the transfer speculation saying: “I’ve read that we’re interested in Sami, but I never play the speculation game.
“There are many interesting players available in the market.”
The player has made only three starts in an injury ravaged campaign and it looks like Carlo Ancelotti will cut his losses when his contract runs its course.
