The Frenchman, who spent three seasons with the Gunners mostly as a backup player, impressed in a recent stint in charge of Ligue 1 giants Lyon before leaving the club at the end of last season.
Garde has been tipped for some big jobs in the past, and now looks to be firmly on Newcastle’s radar as they seek a long-term replacement for Alan Pardew for the 2015/16 campaign.
John Carver is currently in charge of the Magpies for the rest of this season, but is unlikely to get the job permanently.
