The city of Oruro is located at 3,735 meters (12,254 ft.) above sea level, meaning boss Marcelo Gallardo and his staff had to start preparing for the game twenty days in advance in a bid to try and avoid the effects of the altitude.
The players also took folic acid, had a special hydration treatment, and club was prepared with oxygen masks for those players who have problems with altitude. The team also arrived at the Estadio Jesus Bermudez two hours before the game to help the players acclimatize.
“The players took Viagra because it stimulates the circulation of oxygen in the blood and helps them to breathe better,” a member of the club’s medical staff told Clarin, a local newspaper in Argentina.
Despite the doctor’s prescription, River Plate went on to lose 2-0 against the locals.
